UPI payment request or link presented as receiving money

A buyer or caller sends a payment link or request and tells you to enter your UPI PIN to receive money, which instead sends money from you. Since 1 October 2025 ordinary people can no longer send each other UPI collect requests, so the trick now comes as a link or a request from a business account.

How it works

  1. A buyer for something you are selling, or a caller with a refund or cashback, says they will send you money by UPI.
  2. You get a payment link, or a request that seems to come from a shop or company, and are told to approve it with your UPI PIN to receive the amount.
  3. Entering the PIN sends money from your account; the scammer then claims a mistake and asks you to "try again" with a bigger amount.

What it looks like

Example messages. Numbers and links are masked.

I have sent you a payment link for the Rs 5,000 advance. Open it and enter your UPI PIN to receive the money.

Your refund of Rs 1,499 is ready. Approve the request from our company account in your UPI app to receive it.
