How it works
- While you are browsing, a loud pop-up made to look like it is from a well-known software company says your computer is infected or locked, and gives a number to call.
- The "technician" asks you to install a remote access app, then shows fake errors and charges for repair, antivirus or a "refund".
- With remote control, they can open your bank account, see OTPs, or trick you into paying more through a fake refund.

Red flags
- A pop-up with a phone number to call
- Loud alarms and a screen that will not close
- Asked to install a remote access app
- Payment for "repair" or a refund "error"
The one question to ask
Would a real software company put a phone number in a pop-up and ask you to call?
Already paid or shared details?
Disconnect the computer from the internet and uninstall the remote access app. Call your bank on the number printed on your card to block cards and UPI, change your banking and email passwords from a different device, and call 1930 at once if any money has gone.
