Matrimonial site profile asking for money
A profile on a matrimonial site, often "settled abroad", builds trust and then needs money for customs, travel or an emergency.

How it works
- A well-qualified profile on a matrimonial site, often "settled abroad" as a doctor, engineer or officer, shows strong interest and quickly moves the chat to WhatsApp.
- After weeks of warm daily calls and talk of marriage, they say they are sending gifts or coming to India to meet the family.
- Then comes a problem, such as a parcel stuck in customs, an airport fine or a medical emergency, and money is needed urgently, followed by more requests.
What it looks like
Example messages. Numbers and links are masked.
My dear, I have sent you a gift box with gold jewellery and foreign currency. The customs officer will call you. Please pay the clearance charge and I will return it when I come.
Ma'am, this is airport customs. A parcel in your name has foreign currency. Pay Rs 45,000 clearance fee today or it will become a police case.
Red flags
- Avoids live video calls and meeting in person
- Talk of marriage within weeks
- A gift stuck in customs needing your payment
- Money to personal accounts, not official ones
- Asks you to keep it from family
The one question to ask
Why does someone you have never met in person need your money?
Already paid or shared details?
Stop sending money, however urgent the next request sounds, and tell your family. Call 1930, file a complaint at cybercrime.gov.in with the profile, chats and payment details, and report the profile to the matrimonial site.
